Biography | Dr. C. Leslie Smith s medical education began with a Master s in Physiology and Biophysics, followed by her medical doctorate at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where she is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor in Family Medicine and in Surgery. After residency training in General Surgery, she became intrigued with Asian medicine, attended Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Los Angeles, and studied under Kiiko Matsumoto. She then returned to Chicago and completed her acupuncture certification (LAc) at Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, followed by her NCCAOM board certification. She concomitantly completed Harvard s Structural Acupuncture Course for Physicians and is also boarded by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Smith has over 20 years experience in adult education, including a Master s in Medical Education and Leadership and a Fellowship in Surgical Education. She is passionate about understanding and explaining the human body from both biomedical and Eastern traditions. Dr. Smith is currently designing a research protocol to treat renal transplant patients with acupuncture in the hospital, creating a training program to prepare LAc s for hospital-based acupuncture practice, and writing a book. She is a board member of the Integrative Health Policy Consortium, is a former board member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, and is the founder of Acupuncture Hospital Services. She is an active clinician in her private practice and has recently opened a low-cost community acupuncture clinic dedicated to the underserved under the umbrella of Chicago Healing Center. She is happily married with two furry dog-children and loves to dance, change her hair color, and play in her kitchen. |
